History of the Győr Philips factory
In addition to its favourable geographic location, the city of Győr has a long industrial tradition, the necessary technical know-how and a highly developed industrial infrastructure. The history of the Győr facility goes back to 1997. The company, at the time called 'Philips Key Modules Hungary' began its operations in leased halls in Győr. Due to a dynamic increase in production plans, additional manufacturing facilities were required until the new factory building in the Győr Industrial Park was opened. The new 11,000 square meter factory building wasopenhed on July 7, 1998. At the time, Philips Components Ltd. was a dynamically developing company, employing 1,900 people in its two business line operations: APM and OSRW. The cornerstone of the second phase of investment was laid in February 1999 and the opening ceremony took place in August 1999. The new wing was hosting the third business line producing laser optical pickup units (OPU). In September 2000, the construction of a 3,600 square meter production hall was completed as the third phase of the project.
The investment made by Philips had a great significance for the city of Győr, since a new business was introduced in a city that was formerly known for its machine and textile industry. A high-tech industry was established in the city, more than 3,500 new jobs were created.
At the moment the factory owned by Lite-On IT Corporation in Győr with the company name Automotive Playback Modules Hungary Ltd. employs approximately 1000 people continuing the production of CD and DVD modules.
